Martin Q. "Buddy" Gay passed from this earthly life to his Heavenly home on Tuesday, March 5, 2013. Born July 30, 1932, Buddy was a lifetime resident of Wewahitchka and had a wealth of stories to share about growing up in the small town he loved, working with his father to deliver ice, exploring the rivers and lakes and learning useful and practical trades that would serve him well through the years as he worked and raised his family. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church since childhood and worked in many capacities including that of deacon and Sunday School teacher for the Men's Bible Class. He served in the U.S. Navy upon the USS The Sullivans during the Korean Conflict and was proud to be an American.
In 1957 he started work at Glidden, later to be known as Arizona Chemical in Port St. Joe. He raised his family spending countless hours on callouts, coming home with smelly clothes that he called the smell of bread and butter. He retired in 1995 after 38 years of service. He lived a simple life with family and friends and loved his life at the farm in Honeyville gardening, tending his cows, and tinkering on numerous projects. He was a man of great wisdom and experience who loved his Lord and shared his faith and Bible knowledge with countless numbers. His legacy will be honored by the cherished memories of his life.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Vergie Gay; mother, Ruby Gay; father, Tobe Gay; sisters, Joy Carter and Myrna Carolyn Gay.
He is survived by his children; Karen Burge (Rudy), Joy Johnson (Bobby), Mark Gay (Susan), Mitchell Gay (Rhonda) and Arvelia Williamson (Croska); grandchildren, Jamie Gibbens (Heather), Amber Fredericksen (Tim), Kristi Taunton, Gayla Williamson, Colby Lee Gay, and Cheslee Williamson; great grandchildren, Trenton Gibbens, MacKenzie Strickland and Cooper Gibbens. He is also survived by brothers, Troy Gay (Gisela) and Toby Gay (Dorothy) and sister, Mary Ellen Marshall; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins; and a special friend Vera Rozier.
