As the season gets underway this week the Port St. Joe Jr./Sr. High School cross country team is raising funds.

As a non-revenue sport cross country must support itself and this Friday, from 3-6 p.m. ET, enjoy a low country boil at Frank Pate Park courtesy of the cross country program.

For $10 a person will receive a half-pound of shrimp, corn and potatoes.

“We have almost 30 kids out this year which is great,” said Derek Kurnitsky, who coaches the boys’ team while Sandy Quinn coaches the girls.

“We have 24 state titles in sports here because we all coach together,” Kurnitsky said. “We promote two-sport athletes.”

A promotion borne out in cross country where athletes from soccer, boys’ and girls’ basketball and baseball are competing.

“It’s a great way for the athletes to stay in shape,” Kurnitsky said. “They are running to help cross country and also helping other sports as well.”

The first meet of the season was Wednesday at Cottondale.
