A Panama City man was arrested over the weekend after his vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation, a resulting search revealing drugs and a hand gun with altered serial number.


A Panama City man was arrested over the weekend after his vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation, a resulting search revealing drugs and a hand gun with altered serial number.



Elias G. Barela, 19, was stopped by Gulf County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jerome Williams at U.S. Highway 98 and Industrial Road in Port St. around 3 a.m. ET.



Williams made the stop due a traffic violation and upon speaking with the occupants of the vehicle smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.



Williams searched the vehicle and found seven small bags of marijuana packaged for sale and drug paraphernalia.



Williams also discovered a handgun with an altered serial number.



After interviewing the occupants of the vehicle Williams determined the drugs and gun belongbed to Barela.



Barela was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a concealed weapon and possession of a firearm with an altered serial number.



He was taken to the Gulf County Jail and released at first appearance on $12,000 bond.
