Alfred E. "Gene" Harper, 81 was born September 4, 1931 in Sanford, FL and has begun his journey to eternal life with his Lord on Dec. 18, 2012.  For 59 years, he was the loving and faithful husband of Margaret Harper of Port St. Joe, a wonderful father of Desda Fields and son-in-law Walt Fields of Calhoun County, a proud grandfather of Kiki Roberson (Chris) of Raleigh, NC, Heather Peacock (Abrahm) of Port St. Joe and seven great-grandchildren, Justice, Christian, Asher, Brooke and Nathan Peacock of Port St. Joe, and Carter and Layne Roberson of Raleigh, NC.  Mr. Harper was predeceased by a brother, Chester Harper and is survived by a brother Dave Cockman of Raleigh, NC and a special aunt, Jackie Bricker.  He has been a true friend and caring neighbor to many.  He was a graduate of Seminole High School in Sanford, FL and attended Rollins College where he had a football scholarship.  He retired from the AN Railroad as a carman after 40 years.  Mr. Harper served as SGT 1st Class E7 in the Apalachicola National Guard and retired after 20 years.  He was a member of the International Long Shoreman.  He was a member of Oak Grove Church and a deacon for over 20 years where he honored the Lord and his church family in service.  He now no longer knows in part, for he has been welcomed into the presence of His father.  A memorial service was held 11 a.m. EST Friday, December 28, 2012 at Oak Grove Church in Port St. Joe with Pastors James Wiley and  David Fernandez officiating.  The family received friends from 10 a.m. until service time.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Gene's memory be made to Oak Grove Church.  Southerland Family Funeral Home in entrusted with arrangements.  Condolences may be submitted or viewed at www.southerlandfamily.com.
