Poetry Alive! Visits WES
On Friday, March 19th, the students at Wewahitchka Elementary School were treated to a fun filled performance by actors Wendi Loomis and Carl Lombardi, two members of the Ashville, N.C. troupe Poetry Alive!
Since 1984, Poetry Alive! has been presenting poetry shows for audiences of all ages. Poetry Alive! brings poetry from the “page to the stage!”
Actors Loomis and Lombardi entertained the crowd with their high-energy, non-stop recitations of famous poems such as, The Purple Cow by Gillett Burgesse, The Little Orphan Annie by James Whitcomb Riley and Stopping ByWoods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost. Mother Goose favorites such as Hey Diddle, Diddle and Mary, Mary Quite Contrary were also included in their repertoire.
The students especially enjoyed The Creature in the Classroom by Jack Prelutsky --- with WES third grade teacher Mr. John Huft portraying the creature! Several students joined in the fun and assisted the actors on stage by quacking like ducks, barking like dogs and pretending to be crocodiles!
At the conclusion of the performance Reading Specialist Rhonda Pridgeon thanked Ms. Loomis and Mr. Lombardi for visiting Wewahitchka Elementary by reading them an original poem and presenting them each with a jar of honey.
The Poetry Alive! performance was made possible by a grant from The Education Foundation of Gulf County and it was a wonderful educational experience for our students!
Here is the poem by Miss Rhonda:
Adieu and Thank You
Thank you for performing at Wewahitchka Elementary today
Our lives were enriched because you came our way
The lilt and lift of language
The music of the spoken word
Yes, it is one of the sweetest sounds ever heard
So please accept this little treat
It is also something sweet
For this golden nectar Wewahitchka is world renowned
Yes, Tupelo Honey is the finest around
Poetry Alive!
We thank you again
And we bid you adieu
Until next time – our friends…
.
