Bow Wow Bash a Smash
The St. Joseph Bay Humane Society has something to howl about after raising roughly $14,000 at Friday night's Bow Wow Bash.
The bash, which is the humane society's primary fundraiser, drew a crowd of 160 plus attendees to the WindMark Town Hall, an indoor/outdoor space complete with courtyard and formal ballroom.
Attendees enjoyed food from the Great Southern School of Fish restaurant, a cash bar and musical entertainment by Neil Jones and Dennis Dunn.
Though the bash was "masquerade optional," many attendees took advantage of the opportunity to dress up in costumes.
The cast of characters included Roman gladiators, Egyptian queens, two Cruella DeVilles, lots of dogs and cats and one Playboy bunny.
"I was so happy to see so many people get dressed up," said humane society volunteer Sandi Christy.
The humane society will get some needed cash in its coffers thanks to a series of high bids in the night's auction.
Attendees handed over $2,500 for a week's stay in Gary and Sue Gibbs' Scaly, Mountain, NC log cabin and $1,200 for a gourmet dinner for eight prepared by the Conroy, Christy and Heard families.
Bobby Pollock, who donated a handcrafted wooden bowl to the auction, won the night's top prize – a Caribbean cruise for two courtesy of Destinations Travel.
Christy was pleased with the attendees' generosity and called the bash a "big success."
"Everyone was in a good mood. It was a really fun event. People lingered for a long time," she said.
On Saturday, the humane society scaled back its annual Paws in the Park event, hosting a 5K run and 1 mile fun run/walk, beginning at Constitution Convention Park.
A total of 61 runners participated in the events, with participants from Kentucky, Indiana and Alabama.
Middle school student Michaela Ashley edged out Eastpoint veterinarian Hobson Fulmer for the top spot, running 21:26:48 to Fulmer's 21:29:15.
Elizabeth Sapp took first in the 1-mile fun run.
All winners received a handcrafted ceramic trophy crafted by Jan Sapte.
