Thanks for Success of SaltAir
Dear Editor:
This community deserves a round of applause and a pat on the back. The turnout at the SaltAir Farmers' Markets in April and again in May, despite the looming weather, proved that this community, from the ground up, is dedicated to supporting a farmers' market and reestablishing a connection with local food systems. While community organizations, local agencies, and community leaders have been a proponent of the market, the success and continuation of the market is entirely dependent on the community as a whole and you all actually attending the market. I have been greatly inspired by the manner in which our community has come together to support a common goal. In times of the economic downturn and transitions we are all confronting and struggling through on a daily basis, I am proud to say that I live in a community that is so willing to give of their time and financial support to see this market succeed.
I would like to especially thank my fellow board members, Jodi Perez, Sandra Chaffin, Kim Harrison, and Jennifer Taylor, as well as the volunteers who have spent countless hours in meetings brainstorming and working out the logistics of the market and who have committed to many early mornings on market days. We are so blessed to have such wonderful, committed individuals in this community who will show up at 7:30 a.m. on a Saturday morning to set up tents and tables. Did I mention they have done this in the POURING down rain?!?!
Without the funding support provided by Paula Pickett with the Tourism Development Council and Gail Alsobrook of the Redevelopment Agency, this market would have never been possible. A special thank you goes out to each Board of Directors for funding approval. I would also like to thank those in the community, especially Earl and Jane Miller, who have personally donated funds for the operation of the market. A personal, heartfelt thank you goes to Brenda Ward for her constant encouragement and support. We are very grateful to the City of Port St. Joe, who has supported the market in many ways, including providing the physical space for the market. Mayor Magidson, City Commissioners, and City Manager Charlie Weston have all been extremely supportive and willing to do whatever necessary to see this market succeed. A thank you also goes to Commissioner Bill Williams who has been instrumental in facilitating relationships at the State and Federal level.
I would also like to recognize the local vendors and agencies who have participated in the market, including the Chamber of Commerce, Thirteen Mile Oyster Co, The Matty's from Indian Pass, Provisions, Lorinda Gingell of the 10th Street Bed and Breakfast, Palm Tree Books, GALA and local artists, Sand Mud and Clay, Musician Randy Stark, Verandas, and Gulf County Health Department. Without you all this market would not be possible!
Again, I cannot reiterate enough how appreciative we are of everyone in the community who has supported the market. Whether it is giving of your time, financial assistance, coverage in the local media, selling goods, or shopping at the market, you are all imperative to the market.
For all the market goers, please continue to visit the market the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month. As summer approaches we will have many more farmers and an abundance of fruit. For those who keep asking about the tomatoes, they are coming soon! We have taken note of everyone's suggestions and have pushed the market time back. The market will now operate from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. EDT. This will allow our farmers, Mexico Beach residents, and those of you who like to take it easy on Saturdays more time to arrive. Be sure and stop by on May 17th to watch the Plein Air Painters painting at the market!!
If anyone would like to be a volunteer, a vendor, or would like any additional information, please contact us at . I may also be reached at (850) 541-3981.
THANK YOU!!
Amber Davis
