A Memorable Weekend
Dear Editor:
It was just another weekend for most folks here in the Florida panhandle, but the weekend of May 16 meant so much to 40 wounded soldiers. The weekend was filled with well deserved relaxation for these very special soldiers.
Mrs. Linda Cope and others invited the soldiers to Panama City Beach as part of a Wounded Warrior Transition Program. My brother, Jeremy Cabaniss, was one of the individuals who had the opportunity to participate.
Jeremy and his wife Deanna were so blessed by all of the wonderful treatment that they received for the entire weekend. They were able to relax and spend time with other individuals who were going through very similar circumstances, one of which was Sgt. Joshua Cope and his wife, Erica. These two couples had the opportunity to spend time together and with family and friends while leaving some of the worries of everyday life behind.
I would like to thank Mrs. Linda Cope for her commitment to these individuals who have sacrificed so much for our country. I saw countless smiles as I glanced around a room filled with honorable green uniforms - men and women who are so proud to be called American soldiers. When asked, "Why do you stay in the Army?,"' one gentlemen replied, "I loved it; some of the best times of my life have been had in the Army, as well as some of the worst times, but I cannot imagine not being in the military."
Linda has set an example for others with the unyielding support for our soldiers. I pray that others around our country will step up and show their gratitude for our military men and women.
So many local vendors and individuals gave to ensure that the wounded warriors had an unforgettable time while visiting our beautiful beaches. The soldiers were so appreciative; they seemed to be amazed with the hospitality that was shown to them while on their vacation. We are so blessed to live in an area where the community comes together for those in need. I would like to express gratitude to all of those who gave for this event, many of the individuals will never be known, but they have touched the hearts of many.
The Patriot Guard escorted the soldiers into our area with honor as they crossed the Bay County lines. Rooms were donated for the weekend from the beautiful Origins Resort on Panama City Beach, where the soldiers awoke to a view of emerald green water and white sandy beaches.
They were also treated to fabulous meals from some of the area's best restaurants: Capt. Anderson's, Carraba's, Shuck'um's, Jimmy Buffet's and Bootleg Barbeque. Local attractions such as Shipwreck Island, Ripley's Believe it or Not, and Coconut Creek Golf and Maze allowed the soldiers to take part in fun activities to relieve stress and spend time in the sun. Pier Park offered discounts throughout the mall, from free saltwater taffy at the Candy maker to rides on the vintage carousel remodeled from Miracle Strip Amusement Park. The weekend ended with a wonderful service at Woodlawn Methodist Church, where the soldiers were all welcomed with open arms. It was a memorable weekend for all of the soldiers, one that I am sure that they will never forget.
My family and I would like to again say "Thank you" to all of the individuals and vendors who participated in this program. You have blessed so many people by giving. I would also like to ask that we support these vendors as local residents because they gave to a great cause even though the economy is greatly stressed.
God bless you all!
