Operation Medicine Cabinet

The Gulf County Sherriff's Department will be conducting "Operation Medicine Cabinet" throughout the month of August in order to give the public the opportunity to dispose of unused or expired prescriptions and over the counter medications properly and free of charge.

According to the Sherriff's Department, when old medications are kept in a home, it increases the chance for illegal use or theft.

"Operation Medicine Cabinet" was organized in light of the 2009 report by the Florida Medical Examiners Commission on drugs identified in deceased persons and the recent prescription drug overdose by several teens in Bay County.

The Sheriff's Department urges the public to bring any unwanted or unneeded medications to this free collection event where they can be disposed of properly and free of charge.

The operation will take place at Buy-Rite Drugs in Wewahitchka on Friday, August 20, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday, August 21 from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.

The operation will move to Bu-Rite Drugs in Port St. Joe on Friday, August 27 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00p.m and again on Saturday, August 28 from 9:00a.m until 11:00 a.m.

For additional information, please contact Sgt. Chris Buchanan, Community Service Deputy, at the Gulf County Sherriff's Office at (850) 227-1115 or (850)639-5717.
