Lady Sharks Remain Unbeaten

Thus far no team has been able to keep up with the Port St. Joe girls’ basketball team.

And that goes a long way toward explaining how the Lady Sharks (3-0) remain unbeaten.

The Lady Sharks toppled Lynn Haven Mosley 44-33 and district foe Blountstown 29-9 last week in relatively easy fashion, a late charge the key against Mosley and an early charge the fuel against Blountstown.

The Lady Sharks traveled to play Mosley in front of the Lady Dolphins student body.

Port St. Joe started tentatively and was down 19-14 at halftime.

“We just played without focus,” said Port St. Joe coach Kenny Parker. “We kept them in the game.

“We were just not mentally there. We were in a rush, turning the ball over like crazy. We had to calm them down and they just started to play and we kind of controlled the score from there, got rebounds and pushed it.”

The Lady Sharks out-scored Mosley 20-11 in the final period to cap a 30-14 blasting in the second half.

Kayla Parker led all scorers with 24 points. Fanequa Larry added eight points, Mariah Johnson six, Alyssa Parker three, Naomi Warren three and Nicole Spilde one.

On Saturday night, the Lady Sharks weren’t doing much on offense, but outside of a lone 3-pointer from the corner early in the first period neither was Blountstown, which managed that bucket in the first half and five points through three periods.

“You have to make sure you stay focused against a team like that,” Coach Parker said. “I had to keep telling them to get after them. That is what I’m going to have to keep on them about. We have to get out and run and push.”

Johnson led the Lady Sharks with 11 points and Kayla Parker added seven, Larry and Warren four apiece, Tiara Smith two and Alyssa Parker one.

The Lady Sharks hosted Liberty County on Tuesday night, play at East Gadsden on Thursday and compete in a tournament in Wakulla over the weekend.

* The winners of a fund-raising raffle to benefit Port St. Joe basketball were Thomas Leslie, who won the top prize of a weekend stay on Cape San Blas; Jo Clement won second place, a pair of season tickets for all home games this season; and Towan Kopinsky took the third-place prize, two Hungry Man’s dinners from Paul Gant’s BBQ.
