Gingrich tops Romney in Gulf County

While Mitt Romney won the Florida Republican nomination with 46 percent of the vote, in Gulf County it was Newt Gingrich who took the majority of votes cast.

The Gulf County results put Newt Gingrich with 49 percent of the vote, Romney with 28 percent, Rick Santorum with 18 percent and Ron Paul with 5 percent.

Gingrich garnered a total of 664 votes to Romney's 376.

Of the 3,312 registered Republicans in Gulf County, only 1,358 total votes were cast in the primary election, about 41 percent.

Gingrich won the majority of votes in 34 of Florida's 67 counties, with Romney winning the remaining 33.

Gingrich secured most of the Panhandle counties, with the exception of the larger counties of Bay, Okaloosa and Leon casting support for Romney.

Gingrich also won big in Calhoun County, collecting 286 votes to Romney's 180. The same results echoed in Franklin County, where Gingrich captured 48 percent of the vote. In Holmes County it was much the same, with Gingrich capturing 51 percent of votes.

Other surrounding counties including Jackson, Washington and Walton counties also cast support for Gingrich.

In Washington County, voters passed a countywide referendum to allow slot machines at Ebro Greyhound Park on Tuesday night. The referendum passed with 57 percent of voters in favor.

However, pans for the Ebro Greyhound Park call for more than simply additional gaming options. It's part of a proposed expansion of the park into a $300 million resort hotel and entertainment center that would include 300 to 500 hotel rooms, retail, restaurants and an entertainment venue, said Stockton Hess, owner of the park, and his son, Mark Hess.
