Number Nine

To understand how far Title IX has taken us in the past few decades, consider only Gulf County athletics against the backdrop of the Wewahitchka Lady Gators' second-straight state title last Thurday.
Entering the 2006-07 school year county boys' athletic teams had captured some two dozen state titles.
At Port St. Joe High School, there are titles in football, basketball, baseball, track and field and cross country. Wewahitchka High School owns two boys basketball titles dating to roughly 50 years ago.
Since the start of the 2006-07 school year, the county has added three more state titles, all in girls' athletics.
The Lady Gators have taken two softball titles - the 2007 championship the first state crown for a girls' scholastic team in the county - sandwiched around a state title for the Port St. Joe girls track team a few weeks ago, the first title in a girls sport for that school.
As the crowd at Vision Bank in Wewahitchka last Friday would attest - attagirls, you have made a community and a county proud.
And the boys aren't alone in that state title count anymore.
