BOCC should not hire Williams

Dear Editor:

As a Gulf County citizen and someone interested in a healthy and progressive Gulf County, I sent an email two weeks ago to Commissioners McDaniel and Smiley, asking that they do not put Bill Williams in a position to represent our county in any way with regard to the RESTORE funds.

While it is true he has positioned himself to be knowledgeable, his representation of Gulf County and his participation in the receipt of these funds will not give our county the opportunity to start anew. Mr. Williams is no longer a county commissioner and moved from Gulf County months ago; this is an excellent time to reshuffle, refresh, and restore Gulf County to openness and new ideas.  It needn’t be frightening to try something new - and it could be productive for the county. It was heartening to learn that at the Nov. 27 commissioner’s meeting pointed questions were asked about hiring a RESTORE representative, and it is commendable that some commissioners have a new outlook on what should be done.

There are fresh faces on the commission, Mr. Smiley and Mr. McDaniel, and now with the addition of Ms. Bryan, I would ask that you three particularly stand up for county interests, ask the questions that need to be asked, and put any questionable dealings of the past behind us. This is an opportunity to bring the county up to a stellar standard.

I am not alone in thinking that if Mr. Bill Williams is hired and allowed to represent Gulf County in the RESTORE fund project, it may be business as usual. We need responsible and responsive commissioners to put Gulf County first.  Readers if you would like input on this issue, please make an effort to reach out to your commissioner and voice your concerns.
