Now the City plans to “airlift” or barge the historic Cape San Blas Lighthouse to Port St Joe? That is going to be interesting and I wonder how much money they will really save since the houses still have to be moved by land. The cost is still going to be around the $1 million mark to move the Lighthouse complex to town. They have six months to acquire the funding.
The County Commission has committed to moving the Cape San Blas Lighthouse to Salinas Park, less than two miles from its present location and to keep the Historic Cape San Blas Lighthouse on the Cape, overlooking the Gulf as it has for over a century. The cost there will be around $350,000 or one-third of the cost to move to Port St Joe. The County has pledges exceeding $100,000 to offset the cost as long as the Lighthouse remains on the Cape, without any fundraising efforts having been put in place.
Which makes more sense? Which has the probability of less damage to the Cape San Blas Lighthouse? Remain on the Cape? Move to the flood plain in Port St Joe?
The good news is that whichever location finally houses the lighthouse complex, the Historic Cape San Blas Lighthouse will be saved.
