Supporters of the public libraries danced back to the ‘60s to raise nearly $10,000 for 2017.

The recent “Dancing for Books: A Groovy Kind of Love” event at the Centennial Building turned out to be the most popular and successful of the three dances held in support of the public libraries.

A part of that may have been collaboration with the GFWC Wewahitchka Woman’s Club, which joined a committee under the umbrella of the Friends of the Gulf County Libraries to put on the event.

“The event was different this year because we had that partnership,” said Dana Boyer, who coincidentally enough is a member of both organizations. “People enjoyed working together, the camaraderie.

“It was the most well-attended event we have had.”

Well over 250 people came out to dance to the rock-and-roll of the Bama Jam Band, enjoy food catered by the Sand Dollar Café, toss rings to win bottles of wine and take part in several raffles and auctions.

Among those raffles and auction prizes were dessert for a year provided on a rotatitonal basis by the Woman’s Club and nearly $600 in restaurant gift certificates which was won by Frann Smith.

“We had many drerssed to the theme of the ‘60s and a lot of people were out there dancing,” Boyer said. “People were just very enthusiastic about being able to help the library.

“They were all very passionate about that.”

In total, the event raised just under $9,500 for the night, with the committee voting to distribute 60 percent of the totall to the Charles Whitehead Wewahitchka Public Library and the remainder to the Corrine Costin Port St. Joe Public Library.

One priority in Wewahitchka is repair of the front counter, Boyer said.

The Port St. Joe branch is likely to use its dollars for technology.

Sponsors for the event include three Beatle Sponsors, Dr. Tim Nelson, Dr. Rachel Bixler and Dr. Joshua James, who each gave $1,000.

Elvis Presley Sponsors included: No Name Café Books & More, El Governor Motel, Duren’s Piggly Wiggly, Coastal Realty, Lookout Lounge, Gulf Coast Vacation Rentals and Scallop Republic.

The Big Bopper Sponsors were: Nancy and Randy Brockman, Dr. Frank May, Ron and Peggy Childs, John and Carlene Parker, Walter Green and Emerald Coast Credit Union.
