On March 30, members of the GFWC Wewahitchka Woman's Club, and Beulah Harrison, branch manager of the Charles Whitehead Wewahitchka Public Library, were present as Woman's Club President Tunnie Miller signed the Proclamation for National Library Week 2017, April 9 – 15.
First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. All types of libraries participate, reminding all Americans that today’s libraries are places of creativity that offer access to the tools, technology and training essential to the economic and cultural lives of their communities.
Also on March 30, the GFWC Wewahitchka Woman's Club was excited to present proceeds from the "Groovy Kind of Love" Dinner and Dance Fundraiser to the Wewahitchka Public Library, in the amount of $5,884.35!
This event continues what is perhaps one of the most significant accomplishments of the Wewahitchka Woman's Club which began during the 1960’s. The Woman's Club felt that a dedicated library was needed in both Wewahitchka and Port St. Joe. Fundraising efforts were used to purchase and stock a bookmobile, and for the construction of two libraries – one in Wewahitchka, and one in Port St. Joe. In addition to securing funds through a variety of means for the construction, they also held book drives and worked with influential persons at the State level to obtain books. A dedication of both completed libraries was held in 1965.
Support of the local libraries continues to be a big part of the Woman's Club's dedication to the theme of "Living the Volunteer Spirit."
The GFWC Wewahitchka Woman's Club would also like to thank each person who supported our recent BBQ Pork Dinner Fundraiser. It was a great success, due to the participation of many local businesses and individuals.
If you would like to learn more about all the exciting programs and projects in support of our community, join us at our regular monthly meeting, the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. CT at the Glad Tidings Church Fellowship Hall in Wewahitchka. Our next meeting is Tuesday, May 9.
