No, it was not the filming of the latest Transformers movie, and no, there will be no oil drilling in St. Joseph Bay, but the presence of this huge rig last week certainly caused some to slow and gawk.

The rig, essentially a modified oil rig, is used to drive pilings into the Gulf floor onto which reef modules are placed as part of the deployment of reefs by the Mexico Beach Artificial Reef Association

The pilings help ensure the new reefs are not carried off by a hurricane or major storm.

Due to rough seas and inclement weather, the rig came into dock to take on diesel and supplies, waiting for the weather to improve. --- Tim Croft
