On a bright Sunday afternoon, scores of local residents, including many veterans gathered atop Beacon Hill to remember.

It was Memorial Day, the unofficial start to summer. The beginning of beach days and backyard barbeques, but for some filled with memories of family members or brothers or sisters in arms lost in the nation’s wars.

While some were parked along the Gulf of Mexico to enjoy the sand and the sun, others sat atop Veterans Memorial Park in Beacon Hill in remembrance of those that gave the ultimate sacrifice.

After patriotic music, a speech from Cmdr. Tony Almon, Amazing Grace played on the bagpipes by Billy Van Tulip, and a solemn rendition of Taps by Mitch Bouington; Rodney Herring left the crowd with what maybe the only proper words for the day,

“Lest we forget.”
