A long-discussed land swap was approved by the Board of County Commissioners during a regular meeting late last month.

First broached last year, the swap with Deseret would allow the county to take possession of Willis Landing in Wewahitchka while conveying a little-used roadway to the cattle and logging company.

The company approached the county about abandoning Indian Bayou Road in the Howard Creek/Dalkeith area, which the company wishes to close as it establishes its operations.

In turn, Deseret was offering up Willis Landing, roughly 2.98 acres, which the county longed leased from the St. Joe Company.

Deseret acquired the property in its larger land deal with St. Joe several years ago.

Commissioners had discussed the deal off and on since, but until recently commissioners had taken no action.

At the board’s last meeting, commissioners agreed to the formal process of abandoning the roadway.

Veterans park dedication

The Veterans Services Office is planning for a June 22 dedication of Veterans Memorial Park at Beacon Hill.

The park is receiving a $1 million makeover with funds stemming from the Natural Resources Damage Assessment pool following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

The park is the first to be completed from among the four county parks and recreation projects announced four years ago in the first round of NRDA projects.

The park, with a new amphitheater and wall honoring veterans, hosted its first event over the Memorial Day weekend.

County attorney Jeremy Novak said he is working on policies for all county parks, including a rental policy, to bring to commissioners.

June regular meeting

The June regular monthly meeting of the BOCC will be held Monday, June 26, instead of its usual Tuesday slot.

Tuesday through Friday of that week is the annual meeting of the Florida Association of Counties, and BOCC chair Ward McDaniel announced several commissioners will be attending.
