Master Chief Petty Officer Mark Kannan relieved Chief Warrant Officer Phillip Hutchison as commanding officer of Coast Guard Station Panama City during an official change-of-command ceremony in Panama City last week.
Hutchison assumed command of Station Panama City in June 2013 after serving in the maritime safety and security team in Seattle, Washington.
Kannan reported to Station Panama City from Coast Guard Station Oak Island, North Carolina, where he was the officer in charge.
Station Panama City manages search and rescue, ports, waterways and coastal security, as well as federal law enforcement from Powell Lake to the St. Petersburg boundary, in addition to coastal and inland waterways located between the eastern and western boundaries.
The change of command is a time-honored tradition deeply rooted in Coast Guard and Naval history. It represents a total transfer of responsibility, authority and accountability from one individual to another.
