The Band of Gold was just that recently during an annual competition.

The Port St. Joe Jr./Sr. High School band was sporting new hardware after returning from the Daleville Band Competition in Daleville, AL at the end of last month.

In each of the categories in which the Band of Gold was judged, it came away with the highest possible score.

That translated into Superior across the board for Drum Major, Color Guard, Percussion and Overall Band.

“This gives them a sense of pride and gives them something for their hard work,” said band director Mitch Bouington. “You have some good bands there. It is an affirmation of what they are doing.”

The most pride, though, may come from the Directors Cup Award.

The Directors Cup is presented at the end of the competition to the band “whose members most readily exhibit qualities of outstanding character and attitude, cooperation with fellow students and adults, and good citizenship.”

“They have a committee that watches all the bands throughout the day,” Bouington said.

And, yes, that award went to the Band of Gold.

This is the first year the Band of Gold, which travels to Daleville every year, has come away with the Directors Cup.

“It’s good to have them judged that way not only on talent but also on their behavior,” Bouington said.
