Boats on Bayou Terrebonne will be strung with lights Saturday for the annual Christmas Boat Parade.
The parade will begin at 6 p.m., leaving from the Company Canal Bridge in Bourg and making its way to the Humble Canal in Montegut.
For nearly 30 years, the boats have retraced the paths of their ancestors along the bayou, making use of the canals that were a hub of commerce and travel, organizer Kevin Belanger said.
“To still use it for such a festive event is humbling,” he said.
About 20 to 25 boats are expected to participate in the parade, with Santa Claus leading the pack.
“The best part really is seeing the number of people who come out to see the lights,” Belanger said. “It’s obvious they’re yearning for festivities and this puts people in the right mood.”
The event has also become a tradition in the area, with kids who were 5 or 6 years old when the parade began now bringing their own children to see the show and celebrate the start of Christmas.
Because the parade route is near major highways, Belanger encourages everyone to be safe and alert to nearby traffic and careful that small children don't run toward the boats and fall into the water.
