Twice the fun, twice the fireworks
Fast time, slow time, for 364 days of the year the fact that time zones divide much of the area can be confusing, even appointment-altering.
But on New Year’s Eve, well, two times zone provides twice the opportunity to ring in 2018.
Celebrate Twice, a day of fireworks, live music, great food and beautiful beaches, arrives again Sunday, sponsored by the Mexico Beach Community Development Council and the Gulf County Tourist Development Council.
Celebrate Twice highlights the time zone border shared by Mexico Beach, in Central Time, and Port St. Joe, in Eastern Time.
So, one can celebrate the stroke of midnight in Port St. Joe and hop on one of the nine free shuttles that will run 7 p.m. until 2 a.m. CT (that would be 8 p.m. untiul 3 a.m. ET) and head to Mexico Beach to continue ringing 20 minutes later.
There will be six participating restaurants and bars in each town, offering live entertainment, Gulf views and refreshments to ring in the new year twice, if you like.
“Celebrate Twice is such a unique event that can only be enjoyed by a handful of areas around the country,” said Kimberly Shoaf, president of the Mexico Beach CDC.
“The shuttles running back and forth between the two towns will all have security aboard, so peace of mind can be had. Please drink responsibly, while we want everyone to enjoy ringing in the new year twice, we also want you to be safe and come to enjoy our area again and again.”
During the daytime, 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. CT, folks can participate in a Scavenger Hunt through both towns.
Visit CelebrateTwice.com to print out a free Scavenger Hunt punch cards and visit each of the businesses listed to collect New Year’s Eve party favors.
Turn in a completed card at the Mexico Beach or Gulf County Welcome Center by 2 p.m. CT Jan. 1 to enter a chance to win a gift bag of items from Mexico Beach and Port St. Joe.
“(Several) businesses in Mexico Beach and (several) businesses in Port St. Joe will be offering New Year’s Eve swag,” Shoaf said. “This is a fun activity that everyone in the family can enjoy and it gets you out in both communities to explore our great stores and shops.”
Firework displays will be shot off along the Port St. Joe beaches at 10 p.m. ET and then again over Mexico Beach at 12 midnight CT.
The complimentary shuttles will stop at the following participating locations for Celebrate Twice:
Dockside Seafood and Raw Bar, Gracie’s Lounge, Haughty Heron, Thirsty Goat, St. Joe Bar in Port St. Joe; Lookout Lounge, Paradise Craft House & Grill, and the Shipwreck Raw Bar in St. Joe Beach; and the El Governor Motel, Toucan’s, Mango Marley’s, Fish House Restaurant, Rustic Sands Resort Campground and El Governor Motel in Mexico Beach.
