Port St. Joe was atrocious from long range during the first half, and despite an early 3-2 lead trailed throughout the game until midway into the fourth quarter.

So of course the key shot was a 3-pointer from the top of the key by the Tiger Sharks Drew Jones with 43 seconds showing.

It banked in, snapped a 48-48 deadlock and Russell Russ nailed some clutch free throws to make it stand up.

The Wildcats, 7-7, had a slight edge otherwise as the quickness of their guards Brady Roberson and BJ Harris was critical in creating scoring opportunities. Just as telling was St. Joe’s 1-for-13 accuracy from the perimeter in the first half.

Russ tied it at 42-42 with a 10-footer at 5:57 of the fourth quarter. Jones scored from 15 feet and the Tiger Sharks finally led 44-42 at 4:23.

Russ and Jones each had 14 points for Port St. Joe, Jones adding nine rebounds.

Roberson and Jackson Bailey each had 14 for the Wildcats and Seth Ingleright had 10.

Pleasant Grove 60, Port St. Joe 39

For the second game, Pleasant Grove blitzed an opponent after the opening tipoff. This time it was 15-2 when Jaivian Willis scored midway through the first quarter.

From that stage the game often devolved into trading fouls and turnovers. But Port St. Joe was unable to trim the deficit under 10 points following the early run by the Spartans, 13-2.

Mike Rowser nailed a pair of quick 3-pointers to spark Pleasant Grove, which maintained its dominance despite the loss of high-scoring JahMori Bennett to a shoulder injury in the first quarter.

Rowser finished with 15 points and was the only Spartan player with more than 9.

Kendre Gant had 14 points and Travis Roberson 9 for the Tiger Sharks, 8-3.

Third place

Holmes County 60, Port St. Joe 44

It’s difficult to start a run when you can’t get a stop.

Port St. Joe found that out in the third-place game. Initially it was a porous man-to-man defense that Holmes County exploited for a 32-20 lead at halftime.

When the Tiger Sharks, 8-4, switched to a 1-3-1 zone in the third quarter the Blue Devils responded with four 3-pointers.

That expanded the margin to 47-25 despite Holmes County point-guard Ray Powell missing most of the quarter after picking up his third personal foul.

By the time Port St. Joe showed some urgency it was too late. A 10-2 charge cut it to 52-40. Travis Roberson’s 3-pointer made it 54-43 with 1:32 left, but Holmes County secured the win by sinking eight consecutive free-throw attempts.

Darrell Powell had 16 points, Trent Hammack 15 and Caleb Cooley 12 for the Blue Devils, 6-4.

Russell Russ had 14 points and Roberson 12 for the Tigers Sharks.
