“Zero to 25” was the theme as Nicholls State University head football coach Tim Rebowe delivered the keynote address at Thursday's Lafourche Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet at the Wellness Center of Thibodaux Regional.
As the economy in Lafourche Parish has changed in the last three years, so has the winning record of the local university football team under Rebowe’s leadership.
When Rebowe came to Nicholls, he inherited an 18-game losing streak. By year three, the team made it into the top 25 in national rankings, Chamber President and CEO Lin Kiger said.
The economy of Lafourche Parish has also risen in recent months.
In just six months, the price of oil has increased from about $40 a barrel to today’s rate of just over $63 a barrel, a sign that Lafourche Parish is once again on the rise, said Eddie Callais, Lafourche Chamber Board of Directors chairman.
As tax revenues decreased in the parish in recent years, Callais said the chamber took on an active role in moving the parish forward as a whole.
Through partnerships with the Thibodaux Chamber of Commerce, the South Louisiana Economic Council, the South Central Industrial Association and Louisiana’s Cajun Bayou, Callais said he hopes 2018 will be brighter for all residents of the parish.
The chamber will finish the year with new leadership, including Vice Chair Ruble Pitre, Treasurer Timothy Bush and Secretary Ashley Barrios.
The chamber also honored Individuals and businesses who have contributed to the success of the parish in 2017. LOOP LLC was named Business and Industry of the Year; Wynn Management is Business Person of the Year; Kristine Strickland, chancellor of Fletcher Technical Community College, was chosen as Educator of the Year; Jim Boulet is Community Hero of the Year; and Toni Aucoin is Ambassador of the Year.
Boulet was honored for his significant contributions to Second Harvest Food Bank. The farmer from Larose donates several thousands pounds of crops each year to the local food bank.
“This award should go to all of my family and the community who helps me every year to produce turnips and pumpkins, and all of it goes to Second Harvest,” Boulet said.
