Region play opens tonight
The host team earned the title.
The Port St. Joe Jr./Sr. High School boys’ basketball team, the host squad, beat rivals Wewahitchka (semifinals) and Franklin County (finals) to claim the District 4-1A title last week.
The Tiger Sharks (20-5) will host Chipley 7 p.m. ET tonight at the R. Marion Craig Coliseum in a Region 2-1A semifinal.
The Tiger Sharks entered the district tournament as the top seed, with a bye into the semifinals.
Wewahitchka beat Liberty County 77-55 to earn a shot at Port St. Joe in the semifinals while Franklin County pounded Altha 59-25 to move into the semifinals against second-seeded Bozeman.
Port St. Joe downed Wewahitchka 67-53 in one semifinals while Franklin County overcame a 10-point deficit to beat Bozeman 49-37.
“I spoke to the team before the district started and explained to them we cannot have a mentality that we have already beaten any of these teams,” said Coach Sandy Quinn, Jr.
In the title game, the Tiger Sharks were largely in control en route to a 45-35 win.
“I am so proud of these kids because we only won five games last year and now we have won 20 games and will host a region semifinal,” Quinn said.
“The kids played hard, they defended hard even when the ball was not falling. Defense is what its going to take to continue to advance. These players are very talented and they have a chip on their shoulders.”
