The effort to raise funds to bring the lens to the Cape San Blas Lighthouse will kickoff next week with a celebration of two “Lighthouse Ladies.”
The event, hosted by the St. Joseph Historical Society, will serve as the official beginning of a campaign to raise the funds needed to re-assemble the third order Fresnel lens that was in the lantern room of the Cape San Blas Lighthouse for years.
The goal is to return the lens, on loan from the U.S. Coast Guard for the express purpose of displaying the lens, to the grounds of the lighthouse complex in George Core Park.
The celebration, 3 p.m. ET June 16, will be to honor Beverly Mount Douds and Mary Alice Cullifer.
Mount Douds worked for years in the Cape San Blas Lighthouse gift shop and was the resident expert on the history of the lighthouse.
She passed away in March.
Cullifer was known for her paintings of lighthouses, including the Cape San Blas Lighthouse, and her enthusiasm for lighthouses before she passed away in 2012.
The event will be held at the lighthouse, 200 Miss Zola’s Drive.
