A Call for Unction
First, if we look at the whole picture we find that Gideon perhaps was the only one in the whole family that still called on the Lord and served him. Surely his father was not serving the Lord because the altar of baal and grove belong to him. You can also see that the men of the city there knew that Gideon, after the altar was destroyed was the one who did it. So it is quite conceivable that Gideon was not a part of the heathen worship that was going on.
Folks it is not easy being the only one who is a Christian in your family and many of you probably are. Being singled out for standing up for what is right while family, friends and even whole communities speak ill of you can take its toll on any person. But let me just say to you hold on.
After Gideon accepted the call of the Lord and he completed the assignment the next morning the whole town was in an uproar. They were ready to kill him. Their cry was to bring us Gideon so we can kill him. This is the way men who are religious act when you stand for what is right and it messes up there little apple cart if you know what I mean. Ready to crucify you for doing what is right! Now look what happens to his father. He had a change of heart. He immediately went to Gideon's defense and told the men of the city, "Will ye plead for Baal? will ye save him? he that will plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar". Gideon's father had changed sides. In other words, he recognized the error of his way and now was defending the work of the Lord. Because of one man, the least of them all, yet humble and meek became a mighty man of valor. Not only did his father change his ways but through God the nation was delivered from the hand of the enemy.
So let me encourage you to stay true in the midst of controversy. Stay faithful even if no one else in your family is serving the Lord. Even in our local churches we may find that many who call themselves Christians and are not they are just religious. Hold on and carry the Gospel not only in word but in action. The Lord will be with you and you may too , as Gideon, bring change to your family and community.
In Judges 6:25 , we find the Lord has called upon a man named Gideon to do a work. Looking back over the encounter Gideon told Him that he was the least in his family and basically he was not worthy to do anything for the Lord. Truly, not one of us is worthy to be called upon to do anything for our Great Lord. But still, God had told him to destroy the altar of Baal and cut down the grove beside it.
God bless you and I will see you next week.
