The Christian Conscience
~A Christian Country?~
It is claimed by some that the United States of America was founded as a Christian country. Others talk about the “separation of church and state.” There is ample evidence that America was indeed founded as a Christian country. Virtually all of the founding fathers, the writers of the Federalist Papers, the signers of the U.S. Constitution, and the Declaration of Independence, were active members of Bible believing Christian churches.
The term “separation of church and state” appears only in documents where it was desired to ensure that the government of the United States would not dictate, which of the Christian denominations a person must join, or attend. This term does not appear anywhere in the U.S. Constitution, or in any founding document. This was in contrast to the European countries, most of which, as nations, adhered to a particular religious denomination. There are some in our society who have used this term to try to distort the truth concerning the reliance of our founding fathers upon God, and His Son Jesus Christ. In early New England there was a remedy for such lies and deception. It was called tar and feathers!
For anyone interested in this topic, I would refer researchers to the work of a vigorous researcher into U.S. History, named David Barton. He maintains a web site called www.wallbuilders.com, where a person can learn all the information on American History that is ignored, or has been re written, in modern U.S. History, or social studies textbooks, and omitted in the teaching in our schools.
I do not endorse Mr. Barton’s theology, since I am a Christian, not a Calvinist, but I do endorse his historical research. He research is far more extensive, and more trustworthy than any other source, when it comes to presenting the evidence of our Christian heritage.
For nearly 200 years, the United States of America was a truly a nation that trusted in God. The national motto, “In God We Trust” on our money says it all. Many have come to America in the hopes of receiving the blessings from God, that would come to a nation who trusted in Him. Over the last few years, many of these have been disappointed.
True religious freedom, is not freedom to live a life apart from God, as the “separation of church and state” crowd would have us believe. It is freedom to worship God according to the dictates of one’s own conscience. As it is written in Proverbs 14:34, “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.”
