Wewa woman killed by passing car

A woman from Wewahitchka died Sunday when she was struck by a passing car on State 71 north of Clayton Shiver Road about 7:05 p.m. Sunday.

According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, Cherie L. Cantrell, 47, of Wewahitchka, was standing on the west shoulder of the road beside her disabled vehicle. She stepped into the roadway as another car approached in the northbound lane, a 2002 four-door Lincoln driven by Jessie L. Hawkins, 72, of Tallahassee.

Cantrell crossed the southbound lane and entered the northbound lane, directly in the path of the Lincoln, the report said. The front of the Lincoln collided with the right side of Cantrell, who was thrown to the east shoulder of the roadway. Hawkins brought the Lincoln to a controlled stop on the east shoulder.

Cantrell was pronounced deceased at the scene by Calhoun County EMS personnel.

Neither Hawkins nor his passengers, Pennie D. Hawkins, 61, and Glory J. Hawkins, 45, both of Tallahassee, were injured.

The accident is still under investigation, the report said.
