Port St. Joe High School Odyssey of the Mind
Four teams from Port St. Joe Public Schools competed last weekend in the Florida Odyssey of the Mind State Tournament. Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving competition for students of all ages. Teams of students select a problem, create a solution, and then present their solution in a competition against other teams in the same problem and division. Each team is limited to only seven members, and can spend a set amount of money to solve the problem they selected, usually only $125. The PSJE Team, lead by Coach Sharon Hoffman solved The Eccentrics problem. Her team consisting of: Cole Cyderman, Dave Warriner, Haley Wood, Janel Kerigan, Morgan Gant, and Lilly Meizner solved a problem in the earth's atmosphere so the sun would once again shine!
The Team from PJSMS with Coach Gloria Gant consisted of team members: Blaine Bush, Michele Hiscock, Alex Wood, McKayla Ramsey, Kaley Wilder, Emerald Muniz and Ashlyn Morgan. This team convinced the wind to once again blow, and solved the problem in the atmosphere.
Two teams competed from PSJHS. Team A was coached by Carla May and consisted of team members: Douglas May, Jesse Raffield, Heather Strange, Sarah Hiscock, Sara Hoffman, Erica Protsman, and Katie McNeil. This team fixed the holes in the O-zone layer with giant balls of duct tape. This worked too well so they then had to spray their solutions with an Aerosol can emitting large increments of Aerosol. This solution saved the day, and created a fad of large hair that was adapted by the masses. This team placed fourth in the State with this humorous solution to the problem.
PSJHS Team B was coached by Krichelle McGhee and consisted of team members: Jonathan Endres, Rebecca Furr, Forest Halualani, Ashley Lacour, Melanie Raffield, Savannah Steiger, and Autumn Yoakum. Team B worked to solve their problem, "The Classics: The Wonderful Muses," by having the Greek muse, Urania inspire Galileo to create the telescope and also by inspiring the team-created character, a telescope brought to life, to focus more clearly.
