Gulf County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement summary

On Monday, Jan. 27, the Gulf County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) received a call regarding a possible burglary. Deputy Brian Smith responded to the 5600 block of Smith Road, in the Five Acre Farms area. It was determined that someone had trespassed on the property and cut the locks off of a gate and storage shed. The GCSO continues to look into the case.

On Tuesday, Jan. 28, the GCSO stayed busy with preparations for the winter storm. Meetings were held at the Gulf County Emergency Operations Center and with the National Weather Service Office in Tallahassee. Deputies monitored bridge conditions in Highland View, White City and Overstreet. Bridges became icy, but remained open to travel thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Port St. Joe Police Department, Port St. Joe Fire Department, Highland View Fire Department and the road crews with Gulf County Public Works and Transfield.

On Jan. 28, Deputy Michael Layfield responded the Dollar General Store in Wewahitchka in reference to retail theft. The manager discovered video footage of a shoplifter taking items without paying for them. Deputy Layfield continues to investigate the case.

On Jan. 28, David Lloyd Watson (57) turned himself into the GCSO. Deputy Shane Ferrell served Watson with a Marion County, Florida, warrant for Violation of Probation – Lewd and Lascivious Assault (Six Counts). Watson was turned over to the Gulf County Detention Facility to await extradition to Marion County.

On Jan. 29, Sgt. John Murnan responded to the 200 block of Michael Street, in Stone Mill Creek, after the GCSO received a report of a stolen firearm. The victim stated a Browning A-Bolt 7 mm rifle with a scope was removed from his property. The rifle had a custom made stock. On Thursday, Jan. 30, Deputy George Desrosier conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for careless driving on State Road 71 near the Stone Mill Creek Road. It was determined the passenger Rex Veasey, Jr. (22) was wanted for Violation of Probation – Assault. Veasey was arrested and transported to the Gulf County Detention Facility.

On Jan. 30, the GCSO assisted the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia by picking up Todd E. Bowman from Gulf Correctional Institution. Bowman was released after serving a criminal sentence in Florida. Rockingham County had a detainer placed on Bowman for a warrant for Possession of Meth. Due to weather conditions, officers were not able to pick up Bowman in time before he was released. Bowman awaits extradition at the Gulf County Detention Facility.
