Bunco for Books Sunday

Those Reid Avenue Bunco Babes are at again and the Friends of the Port St. Joe Library couldn’t be happier.

The Reid Avenue Bunco Babes will sponsor another “Bunco for Books” fundraiser beginning at 4 p.m. CT on Sunday at the Fish House Restaurant in Mexico Beach.

All net proceeds from the night – which will include plenty of Bunco as well as raffles for a host of prizes – will be donated to the Friends of the Port St. Joe Library, which uses the money to defray costs for items not in the library’s budget, such as periodicals, newspapers, computer software and new books.

“We have raised almost $20,000 in the 18 months or so we have been doing this so it is a growing event,” said Pamela Garmon of the Reid Avenue Bunco Babes. “It is a win for the library, of course, but the community really comes forth and is very generous.”

Bunco is a dice game that is primarily played by women – though plenty of men have participated over the past 18 months in the Bunco for Books events – as a social competitive game.

The game, with rules that are fairly simple and primarily focus on rolling strings of the same numbers, has been around for decades and became a launching pad for the Bunco Babes as the library faced progressively deeper budget cuts.

By donating all proceeds to the Friends of the Library, a non-profit established to sustain the library mission, the Bunco Babes ensure plenty of flexibility in how those funds are spent, generally toward items that have become out of reach for the library.
