Women seeking timely, convenient and compassionate health care have more options this year, thanks to the expansion of gynecologic services to Sacred Heart Hospital on the Gulf’s Women’s Center.

Certified Nurse Practitioner Nancy Anderson began seeing patients at Women’s Health Center in the hospital’s Medical Office Building on May 15. Her services allow women to receive a full complement of screenings, including PAP smears, at their annual mammograms.

Previously, the women’s center provided mammography, ultrasound and bone density testing.  “This additional service will allow women in our community to meet all of their preventive, reproductive health screenings at one location, close to home,” said Anderson.

Current guidelines from the American Cancer Society recommend that women between the ages of 21 and 29 have a pelvic exam and Pap smear every three years. Women between the ages of 30 and 65 should have a pelvic exam, a Pap smear and an HPV test every five years.

However Anderson, who received her training at the Northwestern State University in Shreveport, LA and a subsequent doctorate of nursing practice from UAB explains, “It is vital that we do not confuse the recommendation of less frequent Pap tests with the unchanged recommendation of annual pelvic health exams.”
