Nashville recording artist and songwriter Lisa Shaffer said a certain magic is present during a songwriters’ festival.

She said there is something special about hearing the back story, hearing the inspiration behind a song, understanding where the songwriters’ heart, soul and brain were at the moment of conception of another melody, another lyric.

“When I see a songwriter perform a song I’ve heard maybe on the radio there is a little bit of magic,” Shaffer said by phone from Nashville. “It’s like there is a realness there, an honesty, that is just so special.

“You get to hear where did that song come from. You hear the backstory.”

Shaffer and nearly two dozen other songwriters will be in town next week for the annual Blast on the Bay Songwriters’ Festival.

Shaffer, who performs with Steve Dean and Bill Whyte, two other Nashville veterans, in a performance they call “Hits and Grins” The grins are evident and the hits come when the three take the stage, as they have at the last two Blast on the Bay festivals.

“The three of us just go together and realized how much fun it was,” Shaffer said. “It just made sense to form a group.
