TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The annual Florida Prepaid College Foundation’s Governor’s Recognition Scholarship Program’s deadline is quickly approaching. 7th and 8th grade students in Gulf County County have until October 25th, 2013 to submit their essays for consideration and the opportunity to earn a 2+2 Tuition and Local Fee Plan. The scholarship will provide the winning student a 2 + 2 scholarship that covers tuition, registration and local fees for 60 lower division semester credit hours at one of 28 Florida College as well as tuition, registration fees and local fees for 60 semester credit at one of 12 state universities. All essays must be postmarked by October 25th, 2013 to be eligible.

The Foundation is the direct-support organization of the Florida Prepaid College Board, which manages Florida’s Prepaid College Plan and 529 Savings Plan. The Prepaid College Plan is the largest and longest continuously run prepaid college plan program in the nation. To date, the Foundation has awarded more than 34,700 scholarships, including Stanley Tate Project STARS scholarships supported by the State Legislature.
Entrants will be judged on the strength of their submitted essays on the prompt: “Choose one former governor of Florida and describe his most significant impact on the Sunshine State and your life today.”
Eligible students include those who are currently in the 7th or 8th grade in one of the ten selected counties: Bay, Brevard, Escambia, Gulf, Highlands, Lee, Levy, Polk, St. Johns, or Suwannee. The student’s family must also qualify for the free or reduced lunch program. The winning student must be able to prove Florida residency, provide a valid Social Security Number and agree to remain crime and drug free to receive the scholarship. One winner will be selected from each participating county in December and awarded a scholarship at a county school board meeting or appropriate event.
Students must compose an essay of 500 words or less, and complete the student entry form with parental/legal guardian consent. Students will also be asked to submit a letter of recommendation from an educator or professional, write a 200-250 word personal essay on why they believe they are deserving of the scholarship and a short summary of how they have contributed to their community over the last six months. The Governor’s Recognition Scholarship initiative began in 2006 with the goal of providing a college scholarship to at least one child in each county in the state. It is granted annually to middle school students who compose outstanding essays on the legacy of a past Florida governor. Each year, the Foundation selects a group of counties to participate in the essay contest. This year, Bay, Brevard, Escambia, Gulf, Highlands, Lee, Levy, Polk, St. Johns and Suwannee counties were selected. This year, students will receive a a 2 + 2 Tuition and Local Fee Plan offered by the Florida Prepaid College Foundation.
