Ms. Askew’s sixth-grade Language Arts students at Wewahitchka Elementary School are reaching new heights in reading achievement.
According to research children who spend time reading independently reach higher academic achievement than their peers who do not participate in independent reading. There is evidence that unless children read substantial amounts of print, their reading will remain laborious and limited in effectiveness.
As a Language Arts teacher Ms. Askew realizes the importance of Independent reading. Students not only gain background knowledge, but also improve fluency and vocabulary skills. Knowing the impact reading has on a child’s education as a Language Arts teacher Ms. Askew encourages independent reading with her sixth-graders. So far this year, the students in Ms. Askew’s sixth-grade Language Arts classes have obtained more than 3,812 reading points and read over 688 books. The final date for Independent reading is May 9.
