More than 320 4-H youth converged on the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa July 12-14 for the 2012 Florida 4-H State Horse Show.

Five of those were members of Gulf County’s Big River Rider’s 4-H Horse Club, Shawn Elia, Brooke McMillian, Rylee Waters, Kayla Lindsey and Hayley Smith. The five competed in a variety of events including Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Keyhole Race, Stake Race, Western Pleasure Pony and Ranch Trail. All five made Gulf County proud, said Roy Lee Carter, Gulf County Extension director.

Elia, McMillian and Waters competed in the Junior/Intermediate division which is for youth ages 8 to 13. Lindsey and Smith competed in the Senior Division for youth 14 and above.

Elia took fifth place in Keyhole; McMillian won Pole Bending and Stake Race and finished second in Barrel Race. Waters was ninth in Western Pleasure Pony; Lindsey was third in Pole Bending, fourth in Keyhole and fifth in Stake Race; Smith was second in Pole Bending and Barrel Race.

The Big River Rider’s had more to show with Overall Horse Show Awards.

McMillian won the High Point Florida Bred (Speed Division Award), finished in the top 10 among all Junior/Intermediate competitors and placed in a three-way tie for Reserved High Point Champion.

The Big River Rider’s as a club won the Reserve High Point Small County Award, basically second place in the state among small counties.
