The boys lost for the time on the season, but the Port St. Joe Jr./Sr. High soccer teams continued their winning ways in weekend wipeouts of Freeport High.
The Tiger Sharks, after wins over Franklin County and Freeport sandwiched around a loss to Class 4A Arnold, are now 7-1-1 overall and 5-0-1 in District 1-1A play.
The Port St. Joe girls, after a tie with Franklin County, a loss to Arnold and a blowout of Freeport, now stand 5-3-1 overall and 3-2-1 in district play.
The highlights of the week came over the weekend when Port St. Joe traveled to Freeport on Saturday.
The Lady Tiger Sharks won a “mercy rule” 8-0 victory and the boys cruised to an 8-3 win.
On the girls’ side, freshman Kathleen Rish netted a hat trick (bringing her total on the year to seven) to lead the Lady Tiger Sharks.
Junior midfielder Cailyn LaPlante scored her first high school goal, junior forward Allie Strippling added her third goal of the year, junior midfielder Lexie McGhee her sixth and sophomore forward Loren Costin scored her first of the year.
Christian Laine, who started in goal and played 30 minutes, scored her second of the year later in the contest. McGhee, Laine, Hayley Wood and Brittany Shoemaker had assists while Cat Robles had a pair of assists.
Laine faced one shot and made one save in her time in goal before giving way to seventh-grader Celeste Childs, who faced one shot and made one save over the final 50 minutes.
The Tiger Sharks tied a season-high for goals in their demolition of Freeport. Sophomore Marcel Duarte and senior Javarri Beachum each recorded a hat trick. Duarte now has a team- and area-leading 16 goals and is three goals from the single season school record. Single goals were scored by senior Daniel Jones and eighth-grader Jacob Lacour. Beachum and Drew Lacour had two assists apiece while Justin Hites, Duarte, and Jacob Lacour also had assists.
Senior Tucker Smith (7-1-1) started and played 55 minutes sin goal, making four saves while facing six shots and allowing two goals. Beachum played 25 minutes in goal and made two saves while facing four shots, allowing a single goal.
The Tiger Sharks dropped their first game of the season after Arnold scored in the opening five minutes and held on for a 1-0 win.
Arnold scored early on a deflected goal, that snuck past Smith then held off a furious Port St. Joe offensive late in the second half to protect the lead. Arnold outshot the Tiger Sharks 12-5, with Smith making eight save.
The Port St. Joe girls struggled to contain the more experienced Arnold group and gave up two first half goals and three more in the second for a 5-0 win.
Arnold outshot the Lady Tiger Sharks 17-2. Laine saw 60 minutes of action in goal and recorded seven saves on 12 shots while Chiles had three saves on six shots over the final 20 minutes.
The boys won 3-1 and the Lady Tiger Sharks earned a 0-0 draw.
In the girls’ contest, both teams struggled on offense, Port St. Joe Coach Gary Hindley said. Port St. Joe was outshot 11-5. Laine made seven saves for Port St. Joe.
The Tiger Sharks got a first half goal in the 20th minutes from midfielder Drew Lacour, the goal unassisted. Second half goals were scored by Beachum, on an assist from Hites. Hites also scored unassisted. Franklin scored its lone goal with 12 minutes left. Smith recorded the win, making four saves on six Franklin shots. Port St. Joe had 12 shots.
Both teams played at home on Tuesday versus North Bay Haven, before breaking for the holidays. The girls start at 6 p.m. ET, the boys at 8 p.m. ET.
Both teams end regular season district play at Baker on Jan 5. The girls’ districts are at Port St. Joe on Jan. 15 and Jan. 18. The boys’ districts will be at Freeport on Jan. 22 and Jan. 25.
