Three River Regional Science and Engineering Fair

By: Taylor Hill

On Jan. 23-25 students from school districts all over the panhandle came together at the Florida State University Panama City campus for the Three Rivers Science Fair.

Five students were there representing Wewahitchka High School in the senior division, with this being the first time in 10 years that WHS has had students in a regional science fair - the students were extremely excited to see what the competition would entail.

The following five students received awards from various categories;

Jessica Smith for her project on “The Glucose Intake of Goats” got the U. S. Army Award for an outstanding science project, and an invitation to extend her project over the summer through Auburn University and 4-H affiliates;

Kayla Wood on “The Durability of Paper Towels” went home with the U. S. Army Award for an outstanding science project, and an Honorable Mention in the Physical Sciences Category;

Devan Holyfield with the science project of “Dog vs. Human Saliva” was awarded with the Mu Alpha Theta Award for the most challenging, original, thorough, and creative investigation of a problem involving mathematics;

Alexa Allison on “Color and Taste” was also rewarded with the U. S. Army Award for an outstanding science project;

Shelby Wood had many awards for her project on “Red Bull’s Effect on Heart Rate.” She got second place in the Biological Sciences Category, the Bay County Islamic Society Award for Excellence and $50, and the Office of Naval Research Award for Excellence and $50. Shelby will be traveling to the Florida State Science and Engineering Fair in Lakeland on April 3-5. Congratulations to all of our five competing students and good luck to Shelby at State!
