Gulf Coast Community College presents All I Want To Do – An Exhibition of Drawings and Prints
Panama City, FL - The Visual & Performing Arts Division of Gulf Coast Community College is proud to announce an upcoming art exhibit featuring a curated collection of prints and drawings by artists from different locations across the United States including Brooklyn, Tampa, St. Louis, Knoxville, and Richmond.
The show is an introduction to the creative potential of printmaking and features a wide variety of different print media and various approaches to art on paper. The exhibit title references the Beach Boys’ song “All I Wanna Do,” and is meant to convey the sheer enthusiasm that each of the participating artists feel towards their art and the medium of printmaking.
Printmaking is loosely defined as the art of the multiple and is viewed as one of the most democratic art forms as it produces art for the people. Typically, an artist will create an image on a surface known as the matrix, which can then be printed, producing an edition of prints. Instead of having just one work of art, the artist creates multiples of the same image. Prints are typically less expensive and more accessible to all levels of art collectors. In the same way the invention of the printing press in 15th century Germany revolutionized the availability of books and manuscripts, printmaking introduced the democratization of the arts.
All I Want To Do is a survey of contemporary artists continuing in the tradition of printmaking as an art form. The show will include lithographs, silk screens, etchings, and woodcuts created by using both classic and nonconventional techniques. The spirit of All I Want To Do is a mixture of both old school and new school. The artists involved all strive to keep printmaking in dialogue with both the art of today and the traditions of past printmaking.
The Art Show Opening/Reception will be Jan. 22 from 6-8 p.m. CT at the GCCC Amelia Center Theatre Main Gallery. The Exhibit is free and open to the public and will be on display until Feb. 12. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. For more information, please call (850) 872-3886.
