Whatta Watermelon

In all his 82 years, Bill Lynch had never seen anything quite like it in his Highland View watermelon patch.

There, amid green watermelons both striped and solid, grew a bright yellow melon that left the longtime gardener scratching his head.

"Three acres of watermelons and a yellow one showed up in the bunch," said Lynch, showing off the mysterious melon at The Star office last Thursday.

He'd plucked the watermelon the day before, and carried it around to many local residents, who regarded it with interest.

None, said Lynch, had ever seen a yellow watermelon. Some asked him if he'd unknowingly planted a cantaloupe.

Lynch said he most certainly had not.

He believes the fruit of the watermelon will be red, like that of those growing all around it, but he's not quite ready to slice it open.

"What's that old saying, ‘Keep your ears open and your mouth shut, and you see rare things?'" said Lynch, smiling at his unique watermelon.

"I've never seen one grow like that."
