For more than 15 years we’ve not lifted a finger to pay a single utility bill, so I’m not sure what all the gnashing of teeth is about regarding Gulf Power closing its local office. Without exception, I’m talking about more than 720 accurate, on-time and secure payments for electricity, water/sewer/trash, gas and cable TV. These entities all received our money electronically via pre-arranged agreement.

Provide them your bank’s routing and your account numbers, and voila, you’re free to sit at home and watch The Conspiracy Channel.

I often joke with one friend of mine, “Do you wear a disguise when you carry your ‘gold and silver coins’ to the payment window?” (Props to William Devane, of course).

Whether you enroll in auto-pay (the best way) or you take the time to transfer funds from your computer, the only argument people make to drive to and from such places is that “They don’t trust so and so, or such and such.”

As a final argument: Imagine the time and effort saved that can be used elsewhere instead of paying in person. No more going outside, getting in your car (or on your horse), traffic hassles, dropping it off, heading back home, etc.
