Gadsden City got its first win for coach Bart Sessions on Friday, and it may have just slain a few ghosts of recent past in doing so in a 38-35 win over James Clemens in high school football.

The Titans (1-3, 1-1 in Class 7A, Region 4) trailed 21-7 with less than four minutes left in the first half, having suffered through mistake after mistake. From there, Gadsden City scored 17 quick points to go up 24-21 at the break, and it never trailed again.

After three losses plagued by miscues and missed chances, the Titans were able to close this one out.

A Ryan Sparks pooch punt buried the Jets (2-2, 0-2) at their own 1 with 2:40 left in the game. Clemens moved as far as the Titan 31, then faked a 48-yard field goal on the game’s last play. However, Jackson Reece’s desperation heave fell innocently to the turf, and Gadsden City stormed the field.

The Titans led by as many as 10 points in the second half, but the Jets made them sweat it out until the end.

Gadsden City outgained Clemens 487-351 in offensive yardage.

Ryan Sparks had a big night for the Titans, throwing for 324 yards and three touchdowns on 21-of-33 completions. His 19-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Cole put Gadsden City on top 24-21 with 11 seconds to go in the first half.

Sparks’ scoring toss to Cole late in the first and ensuing 2-point conversion toss to LaRay Mostella turned the momentum in the Titans’ favor for good.
