Gators fall to Sneads

Star Staff Report

The Wewahitchka High boys’ varsity basketball team lost a close game to district foe Sneads last Friday at Gator Gym.  The Gators cut the score to 59-57 with a rally in the final minute but the Pirates held on for a 61-57 victory.

The Gators (7-11 overall) were led by Theryl Brown’s 17 points.  Also scoring in double figures were Jeremy Morrill with 13 and Sebastian Quentin with 10.  Sophomore Jarvar Hill paced the Gators on the boards with nine rebounds.

Although disappointed with the final result, Wewahitchka coach Jay Bidwell was happy with the improvement he saw from his team.

“I was hoping to avenge our early season loss to Sneads,” he said. “They beat us by 25 points up there and we felt like we had a chance to pull out a victory late in this game.  However, I definitely see the improvement in our effort and execution and I anticipate that we will be ready to play at a high level when the district tournament begins.”

In the junior varsity game, the host Gators lost a heartbreaker to the Pirates 46-45.  The junior varsity was also attempting to avenge a 25-point early-season road loss to Sneads and the Gators took their first lead, 45-44, with 38 seconds to go.  The Pirates battled back with a field goal of their own and the Gators final shot fell just inches short.  The Gators were led by Earl Knobel and Micah Lister both with 13 points.  Rashard Ranie chipped in with 10 points.

The Gators hosted Bozeman Bucks on Tuesday, host Franklin County tonight at 5 p.m. CT and travel to Bozeman on Friday for a 1:30 p.m. CT tilt before traveling to Port St. Joe on Tuesday.
