Free Golf Clinic for Women at St Joseph Bay Country Club
The free golf clinic at St Joseph Bay Country Club, underwritten by the Ladies Golf Association, was a huge success. Golf Pro, Ethel Bardsley, who winters here, but who has her own golf club in Maine, taught new women golfers their first lesson Saturday, Feb. 20 with another lesson coming up Saturday, Feb 28. The golfers ranged in age from 10 to 39-plus and only a few had ever played golf before. The club allowed any of the participants to play a round after the clinic at member rates after their lesson.
The participants learned a few essential elements of the game, how to swing clubs to hit the ball, which is sometimes referred to as a "dimpled devil with its own mind", and then spent some time putting on the putting green. They learned how much exercise you get when you play golf and reported some sore spots Sunday, even those who exercise every day.
Two 10-year-olds participated along with their moms. One of the 10-year-olds, Sklyar Neubauer, was visiting from California and the other, Isabel Bogaert, is a local girl who plans to spend some more time on the course. They might be headed for the "Tour" soon.
Ethel Bardsley will be available to conduct lessons for men or women golfers at St Joseph Bay Country Club through March before she heads back to Maine to open their own course for the summer. Players who are not members may play golf at the St. Joseph Bay Country Club. If anyone wants lessons or just would like to play a round or two, call the Pro Shop at 227-1751.
