Tiger Sharks split two

~Kurnitsky selected to coach FACA All-Star game~

The Port St. Joe High School boys’ basketball split a pair of contests last week as the Tiger Sharks continued to struggle with closing out games.

The Tiger Sharks (7-12 overall, 4-6 in District 4-1A) traveled to Liberty County on Jan. 17 and came away with a district win, but lost a fourth-quarter lead last Friday and lost a close game to Bozeman.

The Tiger Sharks broke open a close game at intermission with a second half scoring flurry. The score was 20-19 at halftime, but the Tiger Sharks outscored Liberty County 32-17 over the final 16 minutes.

“We came out in the second half and did a good job,” said Port St. Joe coach Derek Kurnitsky. “I was pleased. We’ll take the win, and a district win at that.”

Alex King had a game-high 21 points to lead Port St. Joe. Jarkiece Davis added 11 points and Natrone Lee and Chad Quinn added seven points apiece. T.J. Williams and Caleb Odom chipped in two points each and Arion Ward and Ramello Zaccarro each had one point.

The Tiger Sharks enjoyed a three point lead entering the final period but Bozeman held the Port St. Joe offense to seven points in the final period in escaping with the victory at The Dome.

“That’s been our Achilles’ heel all season,” Kurnitsky said. “We have to figure out how to close out games. We have been struggling with fourth quarter leads. We have to learn how to seal the deal.”

King had 12 to lead Port St. Joe, which also got 10 points from Zaccarro. Lee added nine points, Odom six, Quinn five and Davis two.

Kurnitsky tapped for FACA game

Kurnitsky was named this week to serve as head coach for the North team during the Florida Athletic Coaches Association All-Star Game on March 17.

Kurnitsky, who served as an assistant to the North squad last year, will coach the top 12 seniors from the northern part of Florida in March.

“It’s a nice honor,” Kurnitsky said. “I’m flattered, I’m humbled.”

Each of the state’s regions selects an outstanding player to compete in the FACA contest. The top 12 from the north and south play one showcase game.

“It is the best seniors in the state,” Kurnitsky said. “It’s a great honor for me, for the school, for the program. I’m glad and honored to be able to go represent Port St. Joe.”
