Gators Win Two Out of District
The Wewahitchka High School boys’ basketball team earned a bit of momentum last week with a pair of non-district wins.
The Gators, 5-10 overall and 1-6 in District 2-2A, lost last Tuesday to district foe West Gadsden but bounced back with wins at Covenant Christian of Panama City and at home against Bozeman.
At West Gadsden last Tuesday, the difference was a 29-11 third-period advantage for the Panthers who cruised to a 75-49 win. The Gators stayed close throughout the first half, behind by just six at intermission, but a third-quarter scoring drought proved their undoing.
Chris Peak led Wewahitchka with 21 points, 15 rebounds, four blocks and two steals.
Chance Knowles added nine points, six boards and three steals and Kenny Fisher had six points, a team-high five assists and three steals. Jamarree Hunter added eight points and nine rebounds.
The Gators traveled to Covenant last Thursday and used a 20-10 scoring advantage in the second quarter to pull out of an early deficit and out-scored Covenant over the final eight minutes to emerge with a 66-61 victory.
Peak was dominant again with game-highs of 28 points and 16 rebounds. He also blocked four shots and had three steals.
Fisher and Hunter each added 11 points for the Gators, Fisher chipping in four steals and a game-high six assists and Hunter pulled down 10 boards.
The Gators out-rebounded Covenant 57-23.
The following night Bozeman came calling at Gator Field House and left on the losing end of a 60-52 score.
Wewahitchka jumped on top early and held the lead at halftime, building it during a 12-6 third quarter and holding off a late Buck charge.
Peak had game-highs of 23 points and 17 rebounds and blocked three shots and had three steals.
Hunter had 13 points and eight rebounds and Fisher and Knowles added nine points apiece.
