For the fourth consecutive year Thanksgiving Day in Mexico Beach, which this year arrives on Nov. 24, will begin with the Turkey Trot 5K race.

Registration opens at 7 a.m. CT and the race begins at 8:30 a.m. CT.

The 5K begins at Under the Palms Park on 7th St. The course threads through Mexico Beach from 15th to 1st.

The race, still just an infant, has grown by more than 100 percent in the first four years.

“We started with 21 people and last year we had over 200,” said race director April Childs.

All proceeds from the event benefit Breastfeed Bay, a task force that supports breastfeeding families in the area.

Entry is $30 and includes a race T-shirt; $15 without a race T-shirt.

Active duty military members run for free and retired military veterans can enter for $10.

Packet pick-up is the day prior to the race at the Mexico Beach Civic Center.

Volunteers for the race are still needed, Childs said.

“We need people to help register runners, to hand out T-shirts, to man water stations,” Childs said.

Anybody wishing to volunteer should contact Childs at 227-8920.
