The Wewahitchka Jr./Sr. High School girls softball team opened the new season by picking up about where the Lady Gators left off last season.

The Class 1A runner-up last season, Wewahitchka down big-school Lynn Haven Mosley 6-1 over the weekend behind the pitching of Brianna Bailey and a balanced attack.

In the second game of the Pre-Season Classic at Panama City Beach Arnold, Wewahitchka and Franklin County, both Class 1A semifinalists last season, played to a 4-4 tie.

Naomi Parker and Gracie Price drove in runs, Aleah Wooten added a single and an RBI and Savanna Lister, Cyrina Madrid, and Jade McLemore all had doubles to lead the Wewahitchka offense against Mosley. Cecily Hale had a triple.

Bailey struck out six to earn the win. Lister pitched the final inning, striking out two.

Errors were the issue against Franklin County, though Price paced the offense, going 3 for 3 with a home run, and Parker threw out the potential winning run at the plate from centerfield.

The Lady Gators will open the regular season 4 p.m. CT Friday when they host Tallahassee Chiles.
